3 reasons client’s fail to attain goals are listed below.
Two very important elements of a coach’s job are as follows:
1. Help our clients discover what changes need to be made their life.
2. Assist them in successfully making those changes.
Thus it is important to become aware of the reasons why some people do not attain the goals they have set.
Although through your coach training you will learn exactly what a coach can do about this to prevent this from occurring, below is a brief guideline.
1. The first reason clients fail to attain the goals they have set is that they do not have compelling enough reasons to go on when the going gets tough.
As a coach, the easiest way to prevent this is by making sure, back at the goal setting stage, that you have the answers to these questions:
• Does this goal align with their values?
• What affirmations will they be repeating consistently that align with that goal?
• Are they 100% committed to the affirmations?
• Are the affirmations in the past or present tense and positively phrased?
On the path to goal attainment it is completely normal for your client to experience feelings of discouragement or doubt. Advise them ahead of time to inform you when they feel like this.
This is when more coaching is needed:
First: Let your client know these feelings are normal and does by no way mean they will not attain their goal.
Second: Ask reaffirming questions.
“What will your life be like if you do not attain this goal?” This question invokes fear of what will happen if they stop taking steps.
“How will your life look like, smell like, sound like, feel like when you do attain this goal?”
“What can you do until this feeling of doubt/worry/fear passes?” These feelings will pass, and sometimes your client’s mind just needs to be occupied while they do instead of trying to fight the negative feelings out.
Remember, when your clients do something new it is 100% normal for them to experience some fear. This is just their mind’s way of letting them know they are doing something new, that their mind is not used to this and that this is uncharted territory for them (which does not mean it is wrong).
2. They do not believe they can actually attain their goal (AKA- limiting beliefs).
To locate and eliminate limiting beliefs and ensure success as a coach you must continually check on that they are changing their NLP using affirmations. THIS IS NON NEGOTIABLE. And your best chance for your client’s success.
3. The third reason why clients may not attain the goals they have set is that as opposed to being in control of their emotions in difficult or trying situations, their emotions control them.
Clients who are the whim of their emotional state and not able to create and summon powerful successful emotions such as gratitude, happiness, motivation, enthusiasm are therefore at risk to take on the emotional states of whoever they are around.
This is fine if they are continually surrounded by motivating and encouraging people. But if they are not (and the majority of your clients fall into the “not” category otherwise they would have one less reason to need a coach) they need to be able to learn how to change their emotional state on command to avoid the pitfalls of the mental process that will stem from negative thoughts and discouraging belief systems.
They also need to remain control of their emotional states when dealing with situations that require a productive emotional approach to further improve their life (work, home etc.).
Teaching your clients to change their emotional state is actually very simple. The first step is to talk with them and discover what questions they can ask themselves to self-coach themselves into a productive mood every morning.
For me the question is: “How awesome is your life?” This always brings a huge smile to my face.
According to Anthony Robbins they might want to try “How can I have an awesome day?” “What am I excited about today?”
During the day when confronted with something that has to be done, but that you do not want to do, try asking yourself “How can I make this fun?”
All day long we have a tendency to ask ourselves negative questions “How do I deal with her?” Instead of more productive questions like “How can I make this next interaction as productive/fun/exciting as possible?”
When your clients learn to put themselves into a positive frame of mind, so much can be accomplished!
